Joseph Magliocco (1898-1963)
Joseph Magliocco might be one of the most unlucky mobsters ever; he was arrested at two different mob conventions. The first arrest came in Cleveland in 1928 and the second coming at the more famous Apalachin meeting in 1957. Magliocco served as the underboss to Joseph Profaci in the Profaci crime family. Magliocco took over the Profaci family in 1962 after Joseph Profaci died from liver cancer. During his one year tenure as boss he had to deal with the “Gallo-Profaci War”. Joey Gallo was dissatisfied with Profaci’s management of the family so he attempted to take over the family. Finally in 1963 the war ended with the arrest and jailing of Gallo. After the war ended Magliocco decided to join with Joseph Bonanno and Joe Colombo in a plan to kill other bosses Tommy Lucchese , Carlo Gambino and Stefano Magaddino in order to have complete control of La Cosa Nostra. Colombo double-crossed Bonanno and Magliocco when he told the other bosses about the plan on their lives. The other families decided to let Magliocco live since his health was already declining. Bonanno fled New York. Magliocco died in 1963 of a heart attack and was succeeded by Joe Colombo.
